As skin ages, it begins to lose collagen filled with hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA add structure and volume to the face, therefore a lack of HA causes the skin to sag and wrinkle – that’s where dermal fillers come into play.

Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels made from naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers add volume to weakened facial features and can stimulate collagen growth. Each dermal filler is unique in its own way but similar in two. First, they plump skin and gently lift it to restore collagen loss due to the normal aging process. Secondly, dermal fillers motivate the body to create its own natural collagen and restore your face to a more natural, youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers approved by the FDA are minimally invasive and very safe. As with any procedure, there are possible risks, the most common being post-procedure bruising and swelling which are usually very minimal and resolve quickly.

Dermal filler treatments typically take 20-40 minutes and the amount of dermal filler needed will depend on volume loss and the areas you would like to restore to its natural beauty. You will see results immediately after treatment.

With a number of fillers now available, the medical staff at Beauty and Body Med Lounge & Spa in San Diego can help diminish signs of aging that appear on the face, lips, and hands.

Fillers can effectively:

  • Smooth out lines around nose and mouth. (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses)
  • Enhance & restore volume to sunken cheeks, hollow areas under the eyes and deep creases.
  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Plump & enhance the lips
  • Smooth out a chin crease
  • Erase fine lines.
  • Lift the brow or a downturned mouth.
  • Rejuvenate hands.

What are Fillers Made With?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)- FDA approved HA fillers include: Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Silk, and VOLUMA

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in your skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like. The results are temporary, lasting 4 to 6 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles. Most fillers need regular touch up to get longer lasting effects. Most HA fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)- FDA approved calcium hydroxylapatite fillers include Radiesse.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. When used in a filler, the calcium particles are very tiny, almost microscopic, and suspended in a smooth gel. The consistency of a calcium hydroxylapatite filler is typically thicker than that of a hyaluronic acid filler, and the results will typically last longer as well, about 12 months for most patients. Longevity will required touch ups for most fillers. Calcium hydroxylapatite is also reported to help stimulate natural collagen production, and it is typically used for deeper lines and wrinkles. Radiesse can be used in the hands for plumbing up veiny hands.

Poly-L-lactic Acid – FDA approved Poly-L-lactic acid fillers include Sculptra Aesthetic.

Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible (meaning it is safe to use in the body) biodegradable synthetic substance. It has been used for many years in a number of medical devices, such as dissolvable stitches. Poly-L-lactic acid fillers are considered a “semi-permanent,” as the results typically last more than 2 years, and can help stimulate collagen production. As a thicker filler material, Poly-L-lactic acid is typically used to treat deeper facial wrinkles. See our page for more information on Sculptra Aesthetic.

At Beauty and Body Med Lounge & Spa we mainly use Restylane L, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Juvederm Ultra Plus and Juvederm Voluma.

For cheeks volumization, Voluma and Restylane Lyft are the preferred choice as they are the hardiest of the Juvederm and Restylane family of products. They can be use in other areas of the face such as nasal labial fold, marionette lines and any area that need support and fullness.

For lips, we use Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane L, Refyne/Defyne or Versa. They can be use to firm up borders and fill in the lips for fullness depending on how full and plumb we want the lips to be. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a popular favorite for patients who like a fuller pouter lips.

For tear troughs or under eyes, Restylane L, Refyne/Defyne or Versa is best as it has fewer tendencies to migrate or cause puffiness in comparison to Juvederm.

Newer fillers are coming on the market, at Beauty and Body Med Lounge & Spa, we will be evaluating and updating which product will best serve the need of the patients and make appropriate recommendation for its use. Therefore it is important to get a consultation before scheduling your filler treatment.
